The last few weeks have opened my eyes, and brought into clear focus something that my mind has touched on but not been able to grasp. Thank heaven I live in modern times. Having watched as my twin girls were sick and in the hospital was terrifying. The scariest thing is that 50 years ago we probably would have lost one, or both of them.
So now I say to all the people that hate the medical community... SHUT UP!!! Grinding up some ginger root and putting it in your granola is not going to solve every medical problem. I believe their is a place for Holistic/Homeopathic medicine, but it seems to me that people who become part of that world are their own worst enemy. Let's face it, the stiff they are peddling is not that much less expensive than the stuff the pharmaceutical companies are selling. Take into account that the Pharma's are getting sued every two minutes, and personally I'm amazed that medication is as cheap as it is.
I'm not defending the drug companies completely, I think we have way to many psychological drugs on the market, and some of them have side effects worse than the disease they are trying to cure.
The most amazing thing to me is that even my wonderful wife is taking shots at the hospital, saying "Amelia is doing much better. Funny how that coincided with them letting her eat." Actually it was because of the fact that she was only getting nourishment through an IV for a period that she got better, and they let her start eating again once she had started the road back to recovery. If they had been letting her "eat" the whole time she would have been Aspirating the food and depositing liquid in her lungs. Which would have exacerbated the problem.
This is a symptom of the Natural Medicine crowd. They use a hospital when they really need one, and as soon as everything gets better they start second guessing what they Nurses and Doctors have done. "Yeah, the treatment worked, but all I really needed was a cabbage compress, and some yohimbe and pine bark tea." Really Einstein? Then next time why don't you drive down to your local Herbalist instead of the Emergency Room! Everybody has the right to do what they want when it comes to their health, but the misinformation that is spread is insane.
Pound for pound the Nurses and Doctor's at Children's Medical Center in Dallas are the best. For the record, they didn't use a single drug in treating my daughters. The IVs were used to deliver sugar water, and saline solution. The treatments they did were to get the mucous and liquid out of their throats and noses so that they could breathe. This is what allowed them to get better. I am glad that they didn't have to give them a cocktail of medications in order to get them back on their feet (metaphorically of course, they're only two months old.) However, if it had been a bacterial infection instead of viral I would have had no issue with them using antibiotics to treat them with.
Well that is my two cents worth.
