Thankfully Modern

The last few weeks have opened my eyes, and brought into clear focus something that my mind has touched on but not been able to grasp. Thank heaven I live in modern times. Having watched as my twin girls were sick and in the hospital was terrifying. The scariest thing is that 50 years ago we probably would have lost one, or both of them.

So now I say to all the people that hate the medical community... SHUT UP!!! Grinding up some ginger root and putting it in your granola is not going to solve every medical problem. I believe their is a place for Holistic/Homeopathic medicine, but it seems to me that people who become part of that world are their own worst enemy. Let's face it, the stiff they are peddling is not that much less expensive than the stuff the pharmaceutical companies are selling. Take into account that the Pharma's are getting sued every two minutes, and personally I'm amazed that medication is as cheap as it is.

I'm not defending the drug companies completely, I think we have way to many psychological drugs on the market, and some of them have side effects worse than the disease they are trying to cure.

The most amazing thing to me is that even my wonderful wife is taking shots at the hospital, saying "Amelia is doing much better. Funny how that coincided with them letting her eat." Actually it was because of the fact that she was only getting nourishment through an IV for a period that she got better, and they let her start eating again once she had started the road back to recovery. If they had been letting her "eat" the whole time she would have been Aspirating the food and depositing liquid in her lungs. Which would have exacerbated the problem.

This is a symptom of the Natural Medicine crowd. They use a hospital when they really need one, and as soon as everything gets better they start second guessing what they Nurses and Doctors have done. "Yeah, the treatment worked, but all I really needed was a cabbage compress, and some yohimbe and pine bark tea." Really Einstein? Then next time why don't you drive down to your local Herbalist instead of the Emergency Room! Everybody has the right to do what they want when it comes to their health, but the misinformation that is spread is insane.

Pound for pound the Nurses and Doctor's at Children's Medical Center in Dallas are the best. For the record, they didn't use a single drug in treating my daughters. The IVs were used to deliver sugar water, and saline solution. The treatments they did were to get the mucous and liquid out of their throats and noses so that they could breathe. This is what allowed them to get better. I am glad that they didn't have to give them a cocktail of medications in order to get them back on their feet (metaphorically of course, they're only two months old.) However, if it had been a bacterial infection instead of viral I would have had no issue with them using antibiotics to treat them with.

Well that is my two cents worth.

Mike,
Glad to hear that both girls are home!
My friend Andi has had 2 boys on ventilators (sp?? and lots of hospital frustrations!) and they suggested rubbing thier arms and legs afterwards to help them not feel over stimulated. Don't rub thier heads or torso, that adds to the problem. Rub shoulder down and then press on their palms. Same for their legs to feet and press on their feet. This helps them "reconnect".

I am not nearly as anti as you think I am. After all, it was I who made the appointment and got the girls to the doctor. Amelia actually did have some medication. She had an ear infection, so I had the doctor give her antibiotic shots in her IV so that her body did not have to deal with that as well. The cabbage method I spoke of last week was told to me by the nurses and doctors I saw when I had my other babies.

You are absolutely right, modern medicine has its place and usefulness. I have always thought that. I just think it is silly to go boo-hooing to the doctor about every little ache and pain, when a little common sense and a couple of old-fashioned remedies do just as much to help.

Hey everbody, welcome to our most intense argument. And I bdo have to say that as good as all of our doctors and nurses were, I have to assume it was not s coincidence that we got all the good ones. Rather, there are so many good ones there that it's hard to get a bad one.

Yes all, welcome to our big debate!

I agree that far to many people go to the doctor every time they get the hiccups, and the cabbage thing may work. The bigger point I was trying to make is that we all rely on the medical staff and the drug companies to do certain things, but there is a subset of our population that feels the need to excoriate them at every opportunity.

I wasn't saying that you are one of those people, just that your statement is typical of the mindset I was talking about. It's like taking your car to a mechanic, and after he's done saying, "Yeah, he fixed it, but I could have fixed it with some WD-40 and Duct tape.

The difference between Modern Medicine and the "Natural"/Homeopathic medicine is proof. The reasons pharmasuetical companies charge so much for their products (other than lawsuits) is that they have to go through the FDA vetting process. They are required to do dozens of different control tests. Not to mention that a product that has been authorized by the FDA is required to be labeled with an almost insane amount of information.

What would happen if we held natural medicine practitioners to the same standard? Would their prices increase? Would we start to find out about undesirable side effects? Remember the Pharmas have to list a negative side effect if it happens in ANY of the test subjects.

Maybe it's just me.

Hmmm-tension in the house.

I feel you are lucky to have had good doctors because the Texas health care system has been years behind the rest of the country. Kelsea was born outside Houston and My niece and nephew were born there too and their policies are years behind the rest of the nation. I would never move back there.

As far as the Homeopathic and mainstream doctor debate. Everything in Moderation and you are intelligient enough to do the research and balance them both. My mom went on a homeopathic thing for awhile and I am a true believer in what is natural and been around for ages can work but not to rely on it with serious illnesses. But Antibiotics are beneficial in moderation as well but their after effects can be serious too. Autumn was in the hospital with a serious cellulitis infection around her eyes at 2. It had the potential to infect her brain. It was necessary to have it but the medication they used to sedate her for a CT scan was inappropriate for a child. She had a horrible reaction and after her visit in the hospital, her hair was so unhealthy. It was so curly and for a year and half after that it was straight and broke off easily. Then after a long time it curled up again. There is the good and the bad. Yes the vitamin and supplement industry needs some form of regulation. That is the scary part. And yet the pharmaceutical companies are out there to make a big buck. And they have the big bucks to push testing and to lobby the FDA. My dad was forced into retirement from Pfizer because a drug they were develping and spent millions and millions of dollars on so they could also hold on to their patent for lipitor failed. It would have made the comapany so much money to have had the drug succeed but because it didn't, major downsizing took place.

In the end it is all about doing your research. More mainstream doctors are now looking at acupuncture and other long been around therapies for their patients. I personally have had more relief for issues I have had from more natural approaches rather than from medications prescribed for me. SO there can be something to it. BUT don't risk a life over it. There you have my balanced two cents over it.
